A Study of Similarity Measures for a Turning Angles-based Shape Descriptor

The increasing amount of digital audiovisual information and the need to efficiently and effectively describe and retrieve this information as well as the big technological developments in the related domains have been acknowledged by the MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) standardization group which initiated a new work item, formally called “Multimedia Content Description Interface” but better known as MPEG-7. MPEG-7 will standardize five types of audiovisual description tools: descriptors, description schemes, coding schemes, some systems tools and a description definition language. Yet to retrieve content based on MPEG-7 descriptions, some non-normative tools are needed, notably the similarity measure used in the matching process. This paper will present a study of similarity measures for a shape descriptor based on turning angles. This tool is of great importance during the matching process since it determines its performance.
